Amidst the Coronavirus pandemic, best-selling author and contemporary psychiatrist Dr. Daniel Siegel will no longer be coming to Peoria for an in-person lecture on March 26. Instead, he will present his lecture live online. Viewers need a computer and online connection.

Dr. Siegel is a clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine and the founding co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center at UCLA. He is an award-winning educator and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He received his medical degree from Harvard University and completed his postgraduate medical education at UCLA.

The topic of his lecture is “Aware: The Science and Practice of Presence,” the title of his New York Times Bestseller that introduces readers to his pioneering, science-based practice of meditation. The book discusses the science underlying the effectiveness of meditation and Siegel’s concept of the “Wheel of Awareness,” a tool for cultivating more focus, presence and peace in day-to-day life.

Free and open to the public, the event is presented as part of Living Healthy, a community education series promoting wellness, safety, and preventive healthcare in central Illinois. This community education project is a joint effort between the University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria, the UIC Library of the Health Sciences, and is supported and made possible by the Timothy W. And Katherine Altorfer Swain Endowed Lectureship in Community Health.
