Pre-Orientation Required Technology Setup
Below are instructions for a technology setup that you must complete before you arrive for Orientation.
Step 1: Activate Your NetID

This is the first and most important step. You MUST complete this before you come to Orientation!

What is a NetID?
Your UIC NetID is your user ID for all university systems. Your UIC email address will be yourNetID@uic.edu.

How do I set it up?
To set up (activate) your NetID you need:

1. Your UIN (University ID Number) and activation token

  • These are in the “UIC Tutorium Application Decision” email sent from UIC Tutorium <tutorium@uic.edu>.

  • Check your inbox, your spam or junk folder, to find this email that has your UIN and NetID.

2. A strong password

3. Your personal email address (for password recovery)

4. Use https://www.uic.edu/apps/netidclaim/manage to activate your NetID

Step 2: Set up 2-Factor Authentication (2FA)
Many UIC systems require 2FA in addition to a password because this provides an extra layer of security. It works by contacting an app (Duo Mobile) on your smartphone to verify that it is you who is trying to access a system.
  • Follow the instructions below after you arrive in the U.S. because you may have a new phone number.
To set up your phone with Duo Mobile:
Step 3: Set up Your UIC Email Account
UIC requires that all students use Microsoft Exchange for their university email.
To set up your UIC email account, follow the instructions on these pages:

Mac & PC:
https://help.uillinois.edu/TDClient/37/uic/KB/ArticleDet?ID=1523#exchange_w
Android Phone:
https://help.uillinois.edu/TDClient/37/uic/KB/ArticleDet?ID=1498
Apple iPhone:

Step 4: Install the Google Chrome Browser onto Your Laptop
  • If you do not have Chrome on  your laptop, use https://www.google.com/chrome/downloads/ to install it.
  • If you have a Windows laptop, Microsoft will try to convince you not to do this, but ignore these messages.
Step 5: Download and Install the Zoom Desktop Client onto Your Laptop
  • Open the Google Chrome browser and sign in with your UIC email address (yournetid@uic.edu) as your Google User ID.
  • Then search for “install Zoom” and follow the instructions to download and install the Zoom app for your operating system.
Step 6: Activate Your UIC Zoom Account
  • On your computer or phone, go to uic.zoom.us.
  • Click on the blue “Sign in” button.
  • Log in with your UIC NetID and password.
Step 7: Install the Zoom App onto Your Phone and Sign in with “SSO”
Download in App Store
Download in Google Play
  • After you install the Zoom app, open the app and tap the “SSO” or “Sign in with SSO” button.
  • Enter “UIC” for the organization name.
  • This will open the UIC NetID sign-in screen.
Step 8: Install Respondus LockDown Browser (LBD) onto Your Laptop

LDB is a special browser (like Google Chrome or Apple Safari) that “locks” your computer screen while you are taking a test or quiz. You will use LDB for taking your placement tests, and you will use it in your classes for any online exams.
