Description

The Welcome Service Project is an annual event, traditionally for incoming first year and transfer students, but now open to ALL UIC students, staff, faculty, and alumni. Occurring the Friday before the start of the fall semester, the project gives students an opportunity to provide service as a group, build a UIC community, and kick off their journey to becoming an active citizen.

This year, we are offering two project options:

Urban Growers Collective - Roosevelt Square Youth Farm*

Roosevelt Square Youth Farm - 1421 W Washburne Ave, Chicago, IL 60608

Assist at their farm, located near campus at Addams/Medill Park! Volunteers will help with gardening and farming projects, as well as get a tour of the site, learn more about the Urban Growers Collective, and how to remain involved in the future. Volunteers must wear closed-toed shoes and clothes that they do not mind getting dirty and are appropriate for the weather. Volunteers also need to have been cleared through UIC Healthcheck/Daily Pass (https://go.uic.edu/dailypass), and will need to wear a mask when 6 feet of distance cannot be maintained and/or when not outdoors. Water, snacks, and work gloves will be provided.

*Please note, this location has changed as of 8/13. The former location was at Grant Park - the new location is closer to campus now, and will still offer a shuttle for those who need transportation.

UCAN - Mural and Fence Painting

UCAN North Lawndale Campus - 3605 W Fillmore St, Chicago, IL 60624

Help UCAN in the North Lawndale neighborhood with a few outdoor painting projects. The organization is looking for support with painting their self-described "longest fence in the world which happens to be on our campus" as well as a mural that will be designed by an artist and just needs support adding colors to appropriate sections. Volunteers should wear clothes that they do not mind getting paint on and are appropriate for the weather. Volunteers also need to have been cleared through UIC Healthcheck/Daily Pass (https://go.uic.edu/dailypass), and will need to wear a mask when 6 feet of distance cannot be maintained and/or when not outdoors. Water and snacks will be provided.

There will be a shuttle from UIC to both project locations, as well as back to campus, although confirmed volunteers are also able to meet directly onsite if preferred.
