- Which words could you replace with shorter ones here, "Hema's manner of talking demonstrated "a disregard for social graces." How about: Longer words like manner and demonstrate and things like that add to the weight of your sentence and make them sound, it can make them sound stuffier. See here, "Section 2.5 of the document "demonstrates the manner in which surfaces "are expected to be cleaned after use." You've probably heard stuff like that. But compare it with this, "Section 2.5 "of the document shows the way "surfaces should be cleaned after use." It's just that much more quicker and faster to grasp. Now, there is a place for words like manner. They can sometimes invoke a tone that you might like to have in a sentence. As here, "The ballboy had a peculiar manner "of waddling onto the court." It's for you to decide, the key is only just to weigh everything up. Which word here could you shorten? "I plan to go shopping today "and acquire a new pair of shoes." You could just say…
